from engineering and natural sciences

The BMBF’s “SINATRA” funding measure supports excellent junior research groups from the natural sciences and engineering who are working on pioneering solutions for artificial photosynthesis and the use of alternative raw materials for hydrogen production. Through innovative, integrated and interdisciplinary approaches, the funded projects are driving forward a climate-neutral, decentralized energy supply and contributing to the establishment of a sustainable carbon cycle – in line with the National Circular Economy Strategy.

Research focus: innovations that shape the future

Artificial photosynthesis enables the production of chemical energy sources and valuable materials by using sunlight as the sole energy source in integrated systems. Its particular strength lies in the conversion of renewable energy into a storable and transportable form. The approach is based on a central principle of natural photosynthesis: the combination of light-induced charge separation with catalytic processes to produce energy-rich compounds.
In this area of research, the focus is on the further development and optimization of technologies for the use of alternative raw material sources for hydrogen production. In addition to water electrolysis, these can help to decentralize and stabilize the hydrogen supply. Integration into the hydrogen economy and related sectors plays a key role here, as this is the only way to develop practical and economically viable solutions.
