Dr. Patrick Schühle, head of the FAIR-H2 junior research group, was awarded the 2026 Carl-Zerbe-Prize at the DGMK/ÖGEW/SCI conference “Processes for Resilient Supply of Carbon Carriers, Fuels, and Chemicals” in Essen. He had already been nominated for the prize in June by the DGMK Executive Board.
With theCarl-Zerbe-Prize, the DGMK honors outstanding scientific work by early-career researchers in the field of the processing and application of carbon carriers. This includes, among other things, their conversion through gasification, liquefaction, pyrolysis, synthesis, or hydrogenation, as well as the further processing of the resulting products. The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros.
During the conference, Dr. Schühle delivered the award recipient’s lecture titled “Toward a Circular Carbon and Hydrogen Economy: Catalytic Innovations in C1 Building Blocks.” The lecture builds on his research into sustainable energy sources, chemical hydrogen storage, and catalytic processes.

The laudatory speech was delivered by Tilman Bechthold, Chair of the DGMK’s “Conversion of Carbon Carriers” Division. In his remarks, he highlighted Dr. Patrick Schühle’s outstanding scientific work in the fields of catalysis, chemical reaction engineering, and sustainable carbon carriers and hydrogen technologies. Together with Gesa Netzeband, Executive Director of DGMK e.V., he handed Dr. Schühle the award.
Dr. Schühle commented: “Sustainable energy sources and chemicals are key building blocks for the transition to a climate-neutral industry. Through my research, I aim to contribute to this effort—together with partners from academia and industry. I am delighted that this work has been recognized with the Carl Zerbe Prize, and I would like to thank everyone who has accompanied and supported me along the way.”
